For LGBT youth, the process of coming out is one that all face at some point during their lives. because it happens for all LGBT people, it is often overlooked but holds importance to the ones officially exiting the closet. however, the cultural climate of 2020 is not the same at the beginning of the LGBT movement in June of 1969. While many aspects of homosexual life have improved, there are some that have remained the same. My thesis begins with taking a closer look at examining the 1980's and 90's and the reception of gay culture in the wake of the AIDS crisis. At this time, the reception towards the disease and the people affected was oftentimes negative, with many choosing not to come out or interact how they are oriented. I later look at different avenues of expression for queer theory and coming out with film, specifically with Love, Simon and later with other forms such as game theory and literature. By analyzing and taking a scope of what representation and coming out has looked like compared to now by using the writings of various queer and literary theorists of the past four decades, the dyad of representation and a safe space for people to come out has improved, but there is still room to grow and branch out this minor culture to something that will be accepted and easier for people to do worldwide.
