Based on a thorough and extensive examination of the relationship between the script found on excavated Warring States manuscripts from the Chu region and the script of the Shang and Western Zhou dynasties, this dissertation focuses on how the former retains the archaic features of the latter. Through drawing a comparison with the Qin counterpart and building upon other scholars' research, this dissertation evaluates the latest literature on the graphic form and the choice of words in ancient times. It provides concrete examples to shows how the script found on excavated Warring States manuscripts from the Chu region preserves the archaic features of the script of the Shang and Western Zhou dynasties. In the process of comparing the two scripts, this study puts forth new interpretations on certain examples. After a comprehensive analysis of the relationship between the two scripts, this dissertation offers some preliminarily explanations as to why the script found on excavated Warring States manuscripts from the Chu region retains the archaic features of the script of the Shang and Western Zhou dynasties.
