In 2003, New Zealand became the first and only nation in the world to decriminalize the sex industry with the passing of the Prostitution Reform Act (PRA). Researchers and politicians have emphasized the advantages of the PRA; however, underage sex worker experiences have been omitted from the discussion. Informed by feminist standpoint theory and arts-based methodologies, my virtual research utilized arts-informed inquiry and semi-structured interviews to investigate how underage sex worker experiences change with adulthood in New Zealand's decriminalized sex industry. Participants engaged in semi-structured interviews and created two distinct art pieces-one depicting their underage experiences and one depicting their adult experiences. The visuals were analyzed using a visual analysis approach informed by social semiotics theory. The visual analysis and interview responses revealed four main themes of changes in underage sex work experiences with adulthood: advertisement and client recruitment, setting and type of work, social services, and safety. Participants expressed that, as adults, they were able to advertise and work publicly, comfortably access social services, and make autonomous decisions regarding their work-all of which increased their overall safety. As minors, participants took more risks, engaged primarily in unregulated independent sex work, and made decisions based on client retainment rather than personal safety. My findings indicate that 1) underage sex work is prevalent in New Zealand; 2) underage sex workers are impacted by the PRA, and therefore, should be included in relevant studies; and 3) minors' protections in New Zealand should be reassessed to ensure their safety and protection.
