Researchers have been exploring successful aging in rural communities of Alaska as it is experienced by Alaska Native Elders. Outmigration based on economic, medical, or family influences has led to many Alaska Native elders to leave their home communities to live in urban communities in Alaska, despite many of them wishing to remain in their home communities. Little is known about the relocation process and how it impacts an elder's aging process. While established rural protective factors are closely tied to a traditional lifestyle, there is little knowledge of which protective factors exist in urban communities supporting successful aging. In this exploratory, qualitative study, I sought to understand protective factors of successful aging in the context of relocation of Alaska Native Elders from rural to an urban community. A community-based participatory approach promoted collaboration of researchers and communities as equal partners at all phases of the process. This partnership enabled participants and communities to contribute their expertise to better understand successful aging and the supportive factors for Alaska Native Elders relocating from the Norton Sound sub-region to an urban community. A life course approach in conjunction with discourse analysis was used to analyze 25 interviews asking about relocation experiences. The results of this dissertation support the prior established notion of Alaska Native Elders that successful aging is strongly tied to Alaska Native culture, subsistence foods and activities, family and community support, and spirituality. Access to these components was found to be limited within Anchorage and Elders may benefit from the establishment of additional services.
