In the United States, transgender people are the targets of widespread discrimination and violence. Anti-transgender attitudes are also prevalent in the United States, with many cisgender people (i.e., those whose gender identity matches the sex they were assigned at birth) believing that transgender people violate the binary genders and are mentally ill. This research sought to investigate a proposed underlying factor of anti-transgender prejudice, dehumanization. Dehumanization is the denial of human traits and characteristics to outgroups, often leading to negative attitudes and harmful actions toward those groups. Study 1 assessed the relative dehumanization of transgender people and predicted anti-transgender prejudice from dehumanization in a correlational study. Study 2 assessed the potential reverse relationship, experimentally testing the hypothesis that transgender people will be dehumanized as an automatic means of reducing guilt or shame after being reminded of past harms perpetrated against transgender people by the ingroup. Study 1 did not find any evidence that transgender people are dehumanized or that dehumanization predicted anti-transgender prejudice. Study 2 also did not find any effects of dehumanization, although this may be due to the failure of the manipulations. Thus, this research does not find support that dehumanization explains anti-transgender prejudice.
