This study validated the factor structure of 29 items from the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) that were hypothesized to represent six social capital constructs. There were 837 complete freshmen's responses to the 2009 and 2012 NSSE. One half of the sample was used to conduct an exploratory factor analysis (EFA) to provide further evidence about the a priori factor structure. The second half was used to conduct a confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) within the measurement portion of a structural equation model (SEM). The analysis resulted in a four-factor solution that retained 14 of the 29 NSSE items. The 14 items loaded into the Civic, Giving, Trust, and Meeting Obligations factors. These factors were not found to be significantly correlated with second fall retention and first spring GPA. Suggestions for future research and practice were presented and a structural component of a future SEM was outlined.
