The purpose of this study was to determine what the experience of educators in small rural school districts teaching middle schoolers diagnosed with oppositional defiant disorder is in order to address gaps in the existing literature and to contribute beneficial information to educational psychologists. Research shows that a significant amount of studies in the areas of mental health and behavioral health in schools has been conducted, however, these studies have mainly focused on elementary-aged children, elementary teachers, and the parents of elementary aged-students. As no studies were found on the experience of educators instructing middle-schoolers with oppositional defiant disorder (ODD), this study sought to answer the following research question: "What is the experience of educators in small rural school districts teaching?" The research methodology used in this study was a generic qualitative inquiry. Eleven (six females and five males), regular education, middle-school teachers who have taught in rural areas in the Middle Atlantic region of the United States participated in the study. Thematic analysis was used and revealed six shared themes that were displayed among the eleven participants: the use of a strengths-based approach with the ODD students, the establishment of trust/rapport and a personal connection, the educator meeting the student needs making for an overall better classroom experience, having flexibility when it comes to the instruction of and working with ODD students, challenges and barriers for the educator due to the lack of appropriate college coursework/preparedness/training, and communication and collaboration among team members. Recommendations for future research are discussed as well as practical implications for school administrators, educators, and colleges and universities with teacher education programs.
