Patients who undergo laryngectomies are at high risk for developing depression. Nurses spend more time with patients than other healthcare professionals, therefore they are in an advantageous position to detect depressive symptoms in laryngectomized patients. After a review of the literature, an anonymous survey was conducted with bedside nurses on an ears, nose, and throat (ENT) inpatient specialty floor to assess their knowledge of screening for depressive symptoms and patient education. Survey results showed opportunities for advanced learning. An interactive e-learning module was created using the Eight-Dimensional E-Leaning Framework. Given the shortage of mental health providers in the United States, the e-learning module addresses resources that can be utilized by patients in a timely manner such as how to approach the topic with your primary care provider, where and how to seek psychological aid, and how to find support groups.
