Thesis (Ph.D.)--Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, 2021.
This dissertation argues that Alexander Maclaren can serve as a model for text-driven preachers for how to apply the Old Testament. Maclaren used the theological truth of a text as a bridge to application. Chapter 1 gives the thesis and traces the history of the problem surrounding how to make text-grounded applications from the Old Testament. Chapter 2 introduces Maclaren by giving a biographical sketch on Maclaren. It establishes his influences and overall preaching methodology. Chapter 3 analyzes his sermons from Old Testament narratives to determine his method of applying the text. Chapter 4, likewise, looks at his sermons from the Old Testament law, especially the books of Leviticus and Deuteronomy. Chapter 5 studies Maclaren's sermons from the Book of Psalms. Chapter 6 provides an analysis of Maclaren's preaching from the wisdom literature. In particular, it examines his sermons from the books of Job, Proverbs, and Ecclesiastes. Chapter 7 analyzes his method of application from the prophetic literature. Finally, chapter 8 provides a summary of the conclusions drawn.
