The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of deductive and inductive preaching in a local church setting. The preaching event fits Bitzer's definition of a rhetorical event, and a sermon series composed of both deductive and inductive sermons was preached in order to gauge the preferences of members of the Graymere Church of Christ and the impacts these sermons had on the hearers. Two focus groups, as well as six additional interview subjects, participated in this qualitative study through a pre-test, post-tests throughout the series, and interviews once the series was included. Findings from this study contribute to the field of communication by furthering homiletics research through practical ramifications of inductive and deductive preaching, considering the effects of both styles in a world that is increasingly biblically illiterate, and filling a gap in the literature by conducting this research in the context of a Church of Christ congregation.
