The goal of this study is to help the reader of Jeremiah 26-45 understand more accurately the meanings and emphases in the literary units in Jeremiah 26-45 by clarifying how all the narratives in chapters 26-29 and 34-45 relate to the words of hope in chapters 30-33. In this study, Jeremiah 26-45 will be analyzed by the methods of rhetorical criticism, considering the unique literary characteristics and the persuasive aspects of the final form of the text. The rhetorical analysis will reveal that the narratives in chapters 26-29 and 34-45 support the central message of future hope and restoration revealed in chapters 30-33 by providing prophetic legitimation-that is, by showing that Jeremiah is a reliable prophet whose ministry has been vindicated. The study has seven chapters. The opening chapter discusses the methodology that is employed in the analysis of Jeremiah 26-45 and deals with the literary features in the book of Jeremiah that show that chapters 26-45 form an independent unit. The second chapter examines the major views of biblical scholars concerning the relationships between the narratives in chapters 26-29 and 34-45 and between the narratives and chapters 30-33. The third chapter discusses the passages outside of Jeremiah 26-45 that authenticate Jeremiah as Yahweh's spokesman. Chapters four and five rhetorically analyze the narratives in chapters 26-29 and 34-45, revealing that all the sections in Jeremiah 26-29 and 34-45 (i.e., chapters 26, 27-29, 34, 35, 36, 37-38, 39, 40-44, and 45) have a shared purpose (i.e., the vindication of Jeremiah's ministry) and relate to Jeremiah 30-33 by elevating the prophetic words of hope in that section. The sixth chapter rhetorically analyzes the oracles and narratives in chapters 30-33, revealing that God's promise of hope and restoration for the people of Judah and Israel in the distant future is repeated in Jeremiah 30-33 and is supported by the surrounding narratives. The seventh chapter concludes the study by summarizing the results of the rhetorical analysis of Jeremiah 26-45.
