The presence of research surrounding the Matthean text has a long history within Biblical Studies. However, the evidence is lacking for thorough research surrounding the geographical symbols and implications that the author strategically places throughout the Gospel using spatial toponyms. This study uses both the socio-rhetorical textural analysis developed by Vernon K. Robbins and the methodological approach suggested by Patrick Schreiner in Matthew, Disciple, and Scribe, revealing "the content within the form"1 of Matthew. This methodology examines the text using the questions: "1. How does the text echo Israel's story? 2. How does Jesus fulfill Israel's story? 3. How does it move the story of Israel forward?"2 This research examines the Gospel of Matthew to ascertain whether the author constructs, within the form of the text, the introduction of the apocalyptic Son of Man and the movement of the Temple of YHWH from the structure in Jerusalem built by human hands into all the earth for the Matthean Community. The analysis reveals an intimate look at the lives of the first-century community using texts, geography, and archaeology to understand the need for propulsive theology and ideology within the Gospel of Matthew specific to their understanding of the temple.
