Many scholars observe that a main theme in the Shepherd of Hermas is the development of repentance. Few, however, have fully developed the concept from the viewpoint of the first-century audience. My thesis is that the unifying theme of the Shepherd is that all godly virtue is grounded in an ever-deepening faith in the Christian Creator God, which is the goal of all believers considering the imminent Parousia.Methodologically, I argue that a rhetorical analysis is the best process by which to determine why the Fathers considered this document γραφή. Rhetorical analysis focuses on the rhetorical devices used by the author to persuade his audience. Moreover, I approach the study as if the document was first presented as an oral performance.Scholarly consensus suggests that the document was written over a period of time, with Hermas writing the Visions during the persecutions of Domitian (90-100 CE)which occurred in Rome, the provenance of the Shepherd of Hermas, completing the Similitudes in mid-second century. This is based upon the description of persecutions, the presbyterial authoritative structure of the church, the proto-orthodox Christology and Pneumatology, and Hermas's habit of relying on an apocalyptic style, a genre found in Second Temple pseudepigrapha, which faded from view circa 100 CE. Evidence from the text indicates that Hermas's church was several generations removed from Nero's persecutions.Hermas writes against spiritual and moral laxity in his church and the subsequent damage it inflicts. His concern is that believers will not be spiritually ready to face the coming tribulations that accompany Christ's return. After Chapter One as the introduction, Chapter Two will address common problems found with the Shepherd of Hermas in scholarly work. Chapter Three will analyze the Visions and posits that the Visions serve to expose Hermas's faults as he begins his journey towards spiritual maturation, an example for the audience. After Hermas encounters a trial (Vis. 4), the Shepherd becomes his spiritual guide (Vis. 5). Chapter Four depicts the Shepherd presenting twelve commandments framed by the Two Ways didactic paradigm. Chapter Five addresses a new level of training as Hermas learns paraenetic parables, devices that cloak meaning meant only for the more spiritually mature. Ten parables teach Hermas deeper elements of Christian faith. Chapter Six concludes that the main theme of the Shepherd of Hermas is that true virtue is the product of faith in the Creator, a God most worthy of human worship. Throughout the document there is evidence that it was originally presented as oral performance, a prominent method used in the early church because of illiteracy rates and the lack of available written documents. Hermas, the messenger, is indeed the learner. His message is urgent, but humor sweetens the medicinal dose.
