Several cultural critics express concern over a lack of sincerity in contemporary discourse. Others propose rejecting sincerity as a rhetorical or ethical aim, citing four purported problems: it may be too easy to fake, rhetorically impotent, ethically stagnant, or even nonsensical. In this dissertation, I argue that these developments are concerning for preachers because sincerity is essential to Christian preaching. After reviewing the four major critiques and comparing these with discussions of sincerity in Greco-Roman and New Testament texts, I draw on N.T. Wright's theological project to nuance the general definition of "integrity with honesty and mutability" to especially suit preachers in the context of Christian belief and practice. In the final two chapters, I consider Eugene Peterson as an instructive example of preaching with sincerity and then detail practical implications for fostering sincerity in the homiletical classroom and the preaching life.
