The sport of ultramarathon running is growing around the world and attracting new participants each year. However, the sport remains fairly homogenized, with the majority of participants being White and male. Thus, little is known of the experiences in ultrarunning for female runners and runners of color. This qualitative study examined the experiences of one Hispanic female ultrarunner. Using a life story approach, the runner and her family participated in a series of interviews that explored her experience in ultramarathons as a woman of color, how participation in ultramarathons impacted her life outside of running, and how different life experiences prepared her for running ultramarathons. Transcribed interviews were analyzed using reflexive thematic analysis with various measures in place to maximize trustworthiness of the study. Four primary themes were generated from the data: no obstacle is too big, ultras advancing social and personal identities, a grateful year turning into a grateful life, and the balance of caring for herself, her marriage, her children, and her career. These findings contribute to the existing literature on ultramarathons and sport psychology while providing suggestions on how to increase diversity within the sport. Specifically, the results from this life story and thematic analysis detail how participation in ultramarathons has the potential to act as a catalyst for identity development, the various challenges ultrarunners encounter in their athletic, personal, and professional endeavors, and the power of gratitude in maintaining balance.
