The purpose of this descriptive multiple case study was to examine the recruitment process of Black student-athletes in revenue generating sports who have chosen to compete for a White head coach and a predominately White institution. This study aimed to provide common themes among Black student-athletes in relation to who and what influenced their decision during their selection process. With an emphasis on the top tier of college athletics, one university within the Power 5 NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision was chosen as the site of the study. Identified participants were Black former student-athletes who were recruited and compete in football, women's basketball and men's basketball. Through the framework of Critical Race Theory (Delgado & Stefancic, 2001), the study aimed to provide Black former student-athletes the opportunity to share their authentic counter stories regarding their recruitment, selection and campus environments. Additionally, with gender being an element among the demographics of the former student-athletes, coaches and institutions, the tenants of intersectionality and anti-essentialism (Crenshaw, 1989; 1991; Delgado & Stefancic, 2001) served as understanding in one style or process not serving all. Data collection included interviewing the participants (n=10) and providing follow-up opportunities for additional information to be shared. Through a thematic network analysis and cross-case analysis, the following themes were exhibited: (1) race; (2) recruitment; (3) selection; (4) academics and (5) gender. Such gathered themes provide future researchers greater insight into the intersection of race, sport and education. The study concludes with a set of implications on further directions and actions necessary to the coaches, institutions and student-athletes.
