Previous research has investigated levels of sport motivation between international and domestic student-athlete population, but this research appears to be limited (Stokowski et al., 2013). The purpose of the present study was to expand on Stokowski et al.'s (2013) research comparing levels of sport motivation between the two groups in NCAA Division I, and include DII and DIII, as well as looking at other variables such as gender, homesickness, and quality of life. Vallerand and Losier's (1999) Integrated Theory of Motivation in Sport and Exercise was used for the present study, which includes Deci and Ryan's (1985) psychological needs, and ultimately looks at three main categories of sport motivation (i.e., intrinsic, extrinsic, and amotivation). A total of 102 student-athletes completed the survey of this study including the Sport Motivation Scale (SMS; Briere, et al. 1995), Athlete Quality of Life (ALQS; Gentner et al., 2011), and Utrecht Homesickness Scale (Stroebe et al., 2002). Results revealed no statistical significance on either of the subscale of the SMS between international and domestic student-athletes. However, a statistical significant difference between divisions of NCAA was found, such that DII student-athletes scored significantly higher on all levels of intrinsic motivation (IM); IM to know (M = 5.55, SD = 1.29) ; IM to accomplish (M = 5.83, SD = 1.08); IM to experience stimulation (M = 6.07, SD = .88) compared to DIII student athletes; (IM); IM to know (M = 4.29, SD = 1.72) ; IM to accomplish (M = 5.04, SD = 1.59); IM to experience stimulation (M = 5.47, SD = 1.43).
