The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of leadership style and athletes' perceptions of their coach's leadership style on an athlete's likelihood of disclosing concussion symptoms, from both the athletes and coaches' perspectives. Sport related concussions have gained immense traction in the world of sport and the effect coaches have on their athlete's disclosure behavior is important to consider. Recent literature indicates that the coach has an important role in development of the team culture surrounding knowledge, education, and leadership style surrounding concussions. These all directly affect athlete's concussion symptom reporting behavior. With this being considered, there are few studies that directly examine athlete's perceptions of their coach's leadership style and the impact it may have on an athlete's likelihood to disclose concussive symptoms. Participants for this study included 75 NCAA collegiate athletes and 26 NCAA collegiate coaches who filled out the Leadership Scale for Sport questionnaire regarding coach leadership, with an added question about concussion symptom disclosure. Correlational analyses were done to investigate the relationship between the leadership subscales and concussion disclosure for both the athlete and coach responses. A MANOVA was run to investigate the effect of athlete or coach on concussion disclosure and leadership style. Significant results indicated that athletes' perceptions of their coaches offering more training and instruction, social support, and positive feedback had a strong correlation with concussion symptom disclosure. Results also indicated both coaches and athletes had an effect on positive feedback and that coaches perceived themselves as using positive feedback more often than athletes perceived them as using.
