The transition to higher education can be a daunting time of change for college-age students generally. Many students arrive on campus under personal duress with the pressures to excel placed on them by family as well as the fear of the unknown (Holterman, 2016). While general population students experience identity challenges as they transition from high school to college to an unknown setting, some population subsets experience additional unique challenges. Specifically, student-athletes experience heightened levels as they must balance dual roles as students and athletes (Navarro, 2012). To address enhanced mental health and wellness concerns among populations in transition, universities now provide support services to enhance mental health and wellness for college students. In addition, today many athletic departments and campuses offer holistic support services for student-athletes who struggle to balance multiple roles (Zarley, 2016). Consequently, higher education institutions are actively seeking ways to not only support students in transition, but also support student-athletes. This qualitative phenomenological study aims to assess the views and attitudes of student-athletes regarding their use of counseling services and understand areas causing significant barriers to access. Drawing from the lived experiences of student-athletes at a mid-size regional comprehensive higher education institution, this study examines student-athletes' attitudes of and experiences with mental health and wellness support services.
