Excessive screen use is a prevalent activity among adolescents. Current recommendations for screen use, including social media use, in adolescents between ages 11-21 years are less than two hours a day (Guinta, 2018). Harmful effects to health are a consequence of excessive screen use, with depression being the leading ailment. Experts recommend primary care providers screen adolescent patients for media overuse, but are not routinely being performed. Increasing screenings for excessive media use can assist the provider in identifying overuse behaviors in the adolescent. This project demonstrated that providers can apply suggested evidence-based tools and interventions to mitigate excessive screen use and the detrimental health effects it has in the adolescent population.
