Self-stigma theory suggests that individuals with obesity will ascribe negative characteristics to themselves and this internalized weight bias contributes to negative outcomes including mood disorders and medical complications. While there is evidence of correlations between internalized weight bias and psychosocial problems in adults, these relationships have received little attentions in adolescents. The study investigated correlates of internalized weight bias in adolescents with obesity, primarily the extent to which weight-based victimization and internalized weight bias of parents impact the internalized weight bias and risk/diagnosis of metabolic syndrome of adolescents with obesity. Parent-adolescent dyads were recruited from a clinic specializing in obesity treatment. Adolescents age 13-20 with obesity completed the Two-Factor Weight Bias Internalizations Scale (WBIS-2F), the Perceptions of Teasing Inventory (POTS) adapted for family-specific teasing, and the Attitude to Obese Persons Scale (ATOP). Parents completed the same measures. Multivariate linear regression was used to identify correlates of weight bias internalization in adolescents. A total of 49 parent-child dyads completed the study. Weight bias internalization in parents was not associated with adolescent weight bias internalization (p = .377), but explicit bias in parents did predict adolescent internalized weight bias (p = .031), accounting for 11% of the variance. Experiences of weight-based victimization in the family did not predict adolescent internalized weight bias (p = .091), but experience of peer weight-based victimization predicted 10% of the variance in internalized weight bias (p = .032). Adolescent internalized weight bias did not predict level of metabolic syndrome (p = .228).
