Objective: The purpose of this meta-analysis is to compare multidisciplinary programs targeting childhood obesity that include parent participation, to conventional programs that oftentimes focuses on a singular approach. Methods: A systematic approach was performed, and each study was critically evaluated applying an inclusion and exclusion criteria and using PEDro scale. Data was extracted, using sample sizes for post-intervention and control groups, looking at waist circumference and body fat %. Confidence intervals for each study were acquired, heterogeneity was assessed, and grand effect size was calculated. Results: A total of 6 studies met the criteria. Data analysis results for body fat % were a grand effect size of -0.33, and a p-value of 0.320. Data analysis results for waist circumference were a grand effect size of -0.31 and a p-value of 0.418. Body fat % resulted in a 12.3% heterogeneity and waist circumference resulted in 6% heterogeneity. Conclusion: Multidisciplinary programs that include parent participation can demonstrate a greater effect on decreasing body fat % and waist circumference when addressing childhood obesity, than programs that have a more singular approach and do not include parents.
