This multidisciplinary project uses an historical and comparative study of imagery of the US within the rival propaganda and state development campaigns of Communist and Nationalist China during the 1950s and 60s to rethink post-war American power as a globally expansive and ideational force in Cross Strait and international affairs. During the critical early Cold War period the two nascent Chinese states produced vast imagery of the US that proved crucial to the framing of competing state identity claims and modernization projects. Situating these dueling state campaigns within a global analytical frame of post-war American expansionism, this project offers two central arguments. First, it draws together theories of discourse analysis, visuality, social imaginaries, and critical and poststructural IR to argue for a reconceptualization of global American power as a significant imaginative force in global affairs, one that shapes the worldviews and domestic practices of foreign states. Second, by building upon this framework and using multi-sited archival research of popular and official sources, this project argues that the integration of images of "America" within rival Chinese state projects fueled Cross-Strait tensions and entrenched enduring ideologies that still complicate the "Two China" issue today.
