The Christian Right Movement has emerged as a new social phenomenon in Taiwan in recent years - a result of the global re-emergence of conservative Christianity and overseas evangelism, combined with the extant ethnic tension and political ecology in Taiwan. Grounding their ideology on religious morality and focusing on the social issues of gender, marriage, family and parenting, the movement strategically gains political power by seeking governmental positions for its members in order to achieve their political aim of theocratic influence on governance. The current study takes the Christian Right movement in Taiwan as a counter-movement to the gender equality movement and documents the resultant social conflict. The study makes extensive references to the changes in the social and political contexts in Taiwan in an attempt to shed light on the movement's characteristics, namely its development, core concerns, political aims, organization types and ideologies. The study also takes Taiwan's unique ethnic issue as the entry point to examine the complexity of the political-religious relations between the Mainlanders, Evangelical Chinese Churches and the Chinese Nationalist Party (Kuomintang, KMT). Furthermore, the study intends to explore the interactions and power relations among these three groups through analyzing the relevant historical context in Taiwan. This research concludes that the Christian Right movement is one of the manifestations of the enduring ethnic conflict between the Mainlanders and native Taiwanese. More specifically, it is an attempt to resurrect the Mandarin-speaking churches from its declining political importance and the increasing pressure to religious secularization. The movement is a cultural war waged for the expansion of religious political influences.
