The energy sector is a crucial pillar to all modern economies. In recent years theneed for measures to protect the environment necessitates and intensifies state aid inthe energy sector. On the other hand, energy security, internal energy market,competition issue, combined with climate change concerns create a sophisticated andmulti faceted challenge at the level of the European Union and its national memberstates . T h e se components are among the main driving forces highlight theconsiderable importance of state aid control in the energy policy of the EuropeanUnion . The purpose of this research is to shed light on the complicated issue of stateaid law in the European energy sector, critically assess the state aid regulatoryframework of the European Commission that fabricates the current EuropeanUnion s debate over energy policy and legislation . In particular , this research willexamine how the European Commission, through the enforcement of state aid rules,to enhance the European energy market integration, achieve environmental objective,and keep the European energy market competitive, sustainable and secure. Indeed,the state aid rules in the energy sector are enforced in a highly interconnectedregulatory environment. T his research seeks to advance the argument that, given thedynamic characteristics of energy market liberalization and the low carbon energytransition, the conglomeration of Article 107 TFEU and various regulatoryinstruments regarding compatibility allows the Commission to trade off differentenergy policy objectives in the process of state aid control to achieve a true, andcompetitive internal energy market.
