Mobile Cloud Computing (MCC) combines cloud services' flexibility with the ease of access and mobility of mobile devices. MCC allows end-users the ability to access many services while minimizing the strain on a mobile device's limited hardware. One significant utilization of MCC is by social media and messaging applications. These applications, using MCC, have gained popularity with both legitimate users and criminals. When a crime occurs, and digital forensic examiners must rely on MCC data, they face numerous challenges (Herman et al., 2020; Al-Ahmad et al., 2019). This project explored past literature on this topic to examine these challenges, how they can be mitigated, and how MCC may evolve in the future. In reviewing the existing literature, it was discovered that cross-jurisdictional agreements and conflicting international laws could cause severe strains to MCC forensic examinations (Krishnamurthy, 2016). Applications like Telegram can take advantage of these challenges to obfuscate legal requests. Applying additional security measures like ephemeral data and end-to-end encryption can make one of these applications nearly impenetrable to outside investigators (Marechal, 2018). Despite this, research shows that several digital forensic practitioners are exploring ways to mitigate MCC challenges. These mitigations range from introducing new diplomatic or third-party agreements to creating new forensically sound suites aimed directly at addressing cloud products. Emerging MCC areas confirm that the technology is merging with other new technology such as IoT and focusing even more on user data security (Varghese & Buyya, 2017).
