Eight Illinois state professional counselors participated in this qualitative phenomenological study exploring the lived experiences of counselors who have provided services to childhood sexually abused African American women. The participants were five African American females, two African American males, and one Hispanic male. The analysis of the data yielded seven overlapping themes: (1) shocked, (2) vicarious trauma, (3) overwhelmed, (4) burnout-exhausted-fatigued, (5) empathy, (6) prepared/unprepared, and (7) satisfied. The outcome fulfilled the study's primary purpose: to understand the lived experiences of counselors working with childhood sexually abused African American women to prepare other aspiring counselors interested in such endeavors.
