Substance abuse is a condition that affects about 40.3 million people. Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) co-occurs with a diagnosis of substance use disorders. Those with SUD and GAD symptoms were more likely to leave treatment than those without presenting GAD symptoms. Use of mindfulness techniques have been proven effective with treating anxiety. Purpose: The objective of this project was to use mindfulness practices to decrease anxiety symptoms in substance abusers ages, 18-65, residing in a substance abuse treatment facility. Methods: Four weekly sessions of guided mindfulness techniques were implemented. Short guided mindfulness meditations and homework were provided. Data was collected in the form of a demographic questionnaire, GAD-7 pre weekly sessions and upon completion of week 4. Results: The data showed a statistically significant change from baseline after incorporating 4 weekly mindfulness sessions. Change was shown as a decrease in GAD-7 results. Conclusion: Implementing mindfulness practices into treatment for substance abusers was shown to help decrease anxiety symptoms.
