As students work through the K-12 educational system, there is an alarming statistic showing how students lose a sense of connection in school from elementary to high school. It is critically important for high school principals to understand the importance of students feeling connected to their campus. In a new era of education, the high school principal needs to understand the importance of academic rigor and, even more importantly, students wanting to come to school and challenge themselves day in and day out. This study was guided by a review of leadership models and the history of the role of the principal in education. The study aims to better understand effective leadership attributes for high school principals. Specifically, it seeks to empower high school principals by identifying strategies for effectively leading a high school with high levels of student connectedness. Interviews and observations were conducted with five high school principals who have high levels of student connectedness and have been at their school for three or more years. The study expands on the current level of understanding through the identification of five specific leadership attributes that include empowering others, building relationships, adhering to core values, serving others, and creating a positive environment. From those five emergent themes, 17 specific strategies are expanded on, ranging from building capacity, being visible, supporting risk-taking, and leading by example, with three specific barriers including over protection, lack of motivation, and unrealistic expectations that hinder student connectedness. The integration of an existing conceptual framework is discussed with a new stepping stone for greater success. The results of this study equip high school principals with foundational leadership attributes and innovative strategies to achieve high levels of student connectedness on a high school campus.
