Kink and BDSM (bondage and discipline, dominance and submission, sadism and masochism) have long been stigmatized and pathologized, even in the psychological community. Much of the older literature and research reflects a negative perspective that informed detrimental pathologizing of this population. Using hermeneutic and alchemical hermeneutic methodologies, this thesis aims to provide an alternative view, shedding light on the role kink/BDSM may play in individuation, journey into Self, and growth. Using psychological literature, new research on kink/BDSM, and depth psychological theories, this thesis focuses on the landscape that kink/BDSM creates in the psyche of practitioners. By examining components of kink/BDSM such as the shadow and unconscious, fantasy and the imaginal, vulnerability, connection, community, and somatic theory this thesis explores what contributes to opportunities for growth for individuals in this community.
