In this thesis, a literature survey was performed to determine the effects of moisture ingress on composite structures. With the continuous increase of the use of composite materials in industries such as aerospace, it is important that we understand the role of moisture ingress on mechanical behavior for continuous fiber reinforced materials in composite structures. Many researchers have shown that moisture ingress weakens the mechanical properties of composite materials. This thesis contains discussions about the causes and effects of moisture ingress in composite structures; and the methods and techniques used to detect moisture ingress. Moisture diffusion in neat epoxy resin systems is a function of free volume and matrix polarity. After further reviewing the kinetics of moisture absorption and how water diffuses, it was determined that moisture diffuses at the epoxy-fiber interface faster than in the bulk due to the amount of free volume at the matrix-fiber interface in the carbon fiber-reinforced plastic composites. It was also evident that the polar characteristics of the resin played a major part in moisture diffusion since water acts as an accelerator due to the hydrogen bond. Resin systems with high polarity absorb more moisture compared to those with a lower polarity.
