The City of Charleston and its surrounding areas have transformed to match the current requirements and cultural changes over the past few centuries. Specifically, Johns Island has been a battleground for contested development, environmental impacts, and the preservation of agricultural lands. This thesis will provide an analytical assessment of the current problem areas including land use, traffic congestion, and unconsolidated development plans while prioritizing the island's ecological assets and cultural roots. By understanding the multi-faceted problems, a comprehensive plan will be constructed to guide future development and signify the opportunities within the high and low ground. Further, recommendations will be made on stormwater/flooding issues, sustainable community cohesion, and the preservation of rural and agricultural land.
