The current study explored the effect of using eye closure strategy to enhance the strength of immediate auditory working memory function in third graders. The study addressed the gap in the literature regarding eye closure strategies as a method of assisting memory in learning. Gender differences were also addressed. Research questions posed were: Is there a significant difference between means of genders in control and treatment groups? Is there a significant difference between means of control and treatment groups? Is there a significant difference between means of control and treatment groups from first administration and second administration, with groups reversed after two weeks? Methodology used was a quasi-experimental quantitative methodology, with convenience sampling, not randomly selected. The sample population included 49 third-grade students, including 25 males and 24 females. A One-Way ANOVA was conducted for each of Research Questions 1 and 2, neither yielding statistically significant results, and Research Question 3 was analyzed using Paired Sample t-tests to determine difference in means between first and second administrations rounds of two groups. Analysis of gender performance and overall scores of eyes opened versus eyes closed did not yield any significant results. However, an ipsative comparison of each group did yield a statistically significant difference in means between the two administrations of the group with eyes opened first, and eyes closed second, with higher scores achieved in the second round. The findings of this research suggest that eye closure, as measured, may be a useful strategy when attempting to recall information learned previously, as a long-term memory recall strategy. Further research is recommended to test the statistically significant result yielded in this experiment for consistency.
