The aim of the current study was to investigate the experience of combat as described by U.S. military Veterans in their published autobiographies and memoirs. This study used a phenomenological methodology to identify and examine themes depicted in the written narratives of combat Veterans of the Vietnam War as well as the conflict in Iraq post-9/11. The existing literature was reviewed, and focused on the following topics: (1) the historical and current literature of U.S. military Veterans' experience of combat; (2) how learning more about the experience of Veterans can help close the "understanding gap" that can arise when a Veteran is in therapy with a civilian clinician; and (3) how autobiographies have been used as a data source in previous qualitative research. Next, a phenomenological approach was used to examine how Veterans have made sense of their experience of combat and how they have articulated this experience. The data examined was drawn from published autobiographical books authored by U.S. military Veterans deployed to Southeast Asia during the Vietnam War and to Iraq during and OIF. The themes that emerged during this process are then provided and explored. These themes included the sense that combat is a world apart, that evokes specific internal experiences, requires response to life-threatening events, and is understood through patterns of meaning making. The themes are explored and discussed in the context of how they may be used to help close the "communication gap" between Veterans and civilian mental health professionals.
