This qualitative study looks at how the leadership at the (Armed Forces) School of Music motivates students to put forth the necessary study, practice, and rehearsal required to successfully become military musicians. Review of the literature shows that learning to play a musical instrument requires such transformational mechanisms as repeated practice (Bandura, 2002). This may be easier said than done, because much of the "drill and kill" of repeated practice can be rather tedious and even "painful" (Hirsch, 7r., 2002, Reliable General Principles section, ¶ 16). But, what can leadership do to influence those who initially lack the internal desire to practice? What kind of educational environment or instructor characteristics and behaviors are most conducive to learning? Does the perceived power type of the instructor affect one's desire to practice and learn? These questions are explored through in-depth interviews with students, instructors, and senior leadership at the School of Music.
