This dissertation contributes to the understanding of Matthean Christology through a study of his portrayal of the humanity of Jesus. Interchanging narrative and discourse to tell the Jesus story, Matthew portrays the human story to provide evidence for and belief in Jesus as the Christ. However, Matthew uses Jesus's humanity for more than simply deepening the faith of his reader. To establish the significance of Christ's humanity, Matthew divides the human story into three parts with the use of the transitional phrase [special characters omitted] ("from that time he began," Matt 4:17; 16:21). These structural markers, in conjunction with redaction and narrative, assist to draw out Matthew's interest in the portrait of Jesus's human beginning (1:1-4:16), human life with transcendent status (4:17-16:20), and human end (16:21-28:20). As the first narrative critical examination of the humanity of Jesus in Matthew's Gospel, this project examines Matthew's Gospel et seriatim. As a result, the evidence suggests three primary conclusions regarding Matthew's use of the human portrait of his main character. First, Matthew prioritizes his interest in Jesus's humanity the most when compared to the other Gospels. Second, Matthew purposely balances the human and transcendent identity of Jesus to encourage belief in his main character. Third, preserving and developing the human story of Jesus encourages the reader to imitate the exemplar from Matthew's perspective. These priorities guide Matthew's portrayal of the human Jesus.
