This qualitative study explored the perceptions that instructors and students have of online learning in a Texas-Mexico border community college. Use of the interpretive approach and dialogical exchange through semi-structured interviews conducted with both instructors and students from a rural, border community college revealed multiple and varied themes. Lack of motivation, issues from poor communication and lack of interest in content were primary instructor themes. Additionally, instructors noted that students were more likely to drop out of an online course when compared to traditional courses. Students believe that online courses do require the same or more work to complete. While the convenience of performing their schoolwork was a positive factor, students still found themselves overwhelmed by the work that their courses required. Despite the difficulties, students strived to complete their work and believed that their motivation was adequate to fulfil the requirements. Students felt they had the self-efficacy and motivation to participate effectively in online courses. Other factors from students included family issues, financial situations, health issues, and internet connectivity. In relation to online courses, internet connectivity is a required component of online learning and while not a common problem in urban areas, border area students still found that internet availability was a factor that negatively affected their online studies.
