This dissertation attempts to promote a metaphysic of interiority in concert with the dominant role of theory in the field of leadership studies. I argue, via Bernard Lonergan, that a metaphysics of leadership is situated and legitimized by communities around a dialectic of power and legitimacy. Within communities, leadership is the ability to discern the role of being-in-love concretely to legitimate selves for possession, liberation, and love. Leadership allows human beings to progress into further unity with being-in-love by using the unrestricted-desire-to-know inherent in our consciousness as a practice inherent in a progression toward "the good" through the transcendental method. The negation of this reality leads to a decline marked by the authoritative declination of generative and creative inquiry and insight. I will show, via the cognitional theory of Bernard Lonergan, that aspects of this thinking are operative in current leadership theories and that, through a fine-tuning of the method, leadership is the process of dialogue between pluralities that facilitates specific and real questions that will lead to further human creativity and flourishing.
