This thesis provides an account of the diverse informal methodologies and strategies modern hyperpolyglots Luca Lampariello, Richard Simcott, and Benny Lewis employ to learn foreign languages faster and more efficiently than traditional learning approaches. Their methodologies, habits, resources, and learning goals are compared and analyzed-two overlapping methods are used for a retrodictive qualitative modeling (RQM) of my Romance multilingualism while learning Modern Occitan. Modern Occitan, a Latin-derived language, shares many syntactic structures common to other Romance languages. In theory, it should facilitate my learning progress as I apply the hyperpolyglots' self-directed methodologies. A journal is kept noting any linguistic difficulties that arise from the learning, such as trouble memorizing the lexicon, comprehending slang, relating the syntactic structures to another Romance language, dialectal morphosyntactic deviances, and pronunciation. Moreover, through the retrodictive qualitative modeling, I explore how the two methods aid my acquisition of particularly challenging grammatical structures and my ability to acquire them. The results show how subjective learning a foreign language is and that there is no "perfect" or "best" method to learn a foreign language. Instead, a multitude of resources is needed to immerse the individual in the language fully.
