"The Transcendence of Timbre" explores the organization of timbre and spatialization in Jonathan Harvey's Bhakti. While some analyses of this work do exist, few authors discuss these attributes in specific detail. Furthermore, the elements of timbre and space are becoming increasingly important to musical discourse in part due to the expansion of digital technologies-and Harvey's Bhakti lies at a critical juncture in this development. The following text examines Harvey's use of timbre and spatialization throughout many of the movements in Bhakti as well as some discussion of the work as a whole and it's influence in the field of contemporary and electroacoustic music. Through critical analysis, it is revealed that Harvey's manipulation of timbre and organization of space offer an evocative layer to the musical narrative.
