There currently exist several discussions critiquing the effectiveness of the traditional research paper (Davis and Shadle, Romano, Otte). This project joins these discussions and others to investigate what current research says about the use of alternative and multigenre writing for the research paper; I explore what students stand to gain by taking on a multigenre research paper as opposed to the traditional research paper. I investigate not only how the multigenre research paper fulfills the California Language Arts eleventh and twelfth grade content standards, but also how this type of writing might go beyond the standards. Finally, with a combination of research and my own experience, I create a model for utilizing the multigenre research paper in the high school classroom.
