This dissertation explores various dimensions in representing queerness vis-a-vis Chinese kinship in cinematic and popular cultures in postsocialist Mainland China in the recent decade. Identifying queering Chinese kinship as an important social praxis and a negotiative strategy in cultural representations, the thesis scrutinizes the ways in which its dynamics typifies the ongoing negotiations in China between new sexual identities and individual life trajectories and the persistent influence of heteronormative social and cultural apparatuses, and argues that such dynamics constitute a key aspect of Chinese public culture. Offering four case studies that cover the genres of independent documentary, art-house cinema, musical theater, and online video, the thesis delineates a picture of Chinese queerness and kinship in interaction, contestation, and transformation against a background characterized by complex and contradictory forces of local media control and censorship, statesponsored commercialization and cultural liberalization, intraregional exchanges of capital, talent and knowledge, transnational media flows, and global popular cultural encounters. By so doing, I observe how the convergence of local, regional, and global sexual knowledges and cultural politics gives rise to new modes of queer becoming, new configurations of Chinese kinship, as well as new structures of hegemony and homonormativity.
