The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recognizes microplastics as a Contaminant of Emerging Concern (CEC) in aquatic environments. In this study, the microplastic count was evaluated by analysis of bivalves harvested from aquaculture sites. Crassostrea virginica and Mercenaria mercenaria were collected from ten locations surrounding the lower Chesapeake Bay and analyzed to determine microplastic content. Microplastics were visually identified using epi-fluorescence microscopy. The results of this study can contribute to public knowledge of the importance of water quality in aquaculture areas.
