Located on the western coast of Madagascar, the offshore Morondava Basin is a frontier hydrocarbon exploration area. Onshore exploration activity has made several finds, including gas and heavy oil discoveries, but ceased in 1992; no offshore wells have been drilled since 1985. The Upper Cretaceous - Miocene sections were interpreted using a 3,200 km2 time-migrated 3-D seismic data set, in addition to well data from shallow updip wells. A sequence stratigraphic framework is presented, in addition to the trapping potential of Oligocene-Miocene turbidite deposits. Four second-order Upper Jurassic - Miocene megasequences were defined. Each megasequence is composed of multiple third-order sequences. Megasequences vary in structure, time-thickness, depositional environment, seismic facies, and areal distribution. Megasequence 1 (MS 1, Upper Jurassic - Maastrichtian) consists of deepwater shales. Megasequence 2 (MS 2, Paleocene - Oligocene) is an aggradational carbonate deposit with thinner shales deposited in the southern portion of the study area. MS 2 is interpreted to have been deposited in shallower water depths and did not extend as far into the basin as MS 1. A major erosional event removes a significant (up to 1.2 seconds, twt) amount of MS 1 and MS 2 sediment, this event is represented by a regional erosive marker (Oligocene sequence boundary). Megasequence 3 (MS 3, Oligocene - Miocene) comprises seven sequences deposited in a base-of-slope setting. These seven sequences, which consist of channel and levee-overbank deposits, onlap the Oligocene sequence boundary. MS 3 sequences backstep up the Oligocene sequence boundary, with each sequence deposited successively further upslope. These seven sequences migrate northward in a laterally offset stacking pattern. Megasequence 4 (MS 4, Miocene) represents a reversion to a progradational margin, and comprises sets of prograding clinoforms updip, and downlapping reflections basinward. No wells have been drilled in the deepwater portion of the basin. As a result, reservoir and seal lithologies cannot be directly analyzed. However, seismic data suggests that stratigraphic traps, and structural traps above igneous intrusions, are present. Seafloor sediment cores suggest there are generating source rocks in the area. Updip (onshore) wells show average TOC values of 2.5% in the proposed Cretaceous marine shale source rock interval.
