Though the process of papermaking has changed only slightly since its invention more than two-thousand years ago, the use of paper has developed into an industry that is involved in nearly every aspect of life. While not the most common material, paper is used frequently in the construction of musical instruments. Unfortunately, very little scholarly work has been dedicated to this topic. This thesis explores the use of paper as a material in all facets of musical instrument making. Through a survey of instruments both at the National Music Museum and in various other collections, the methods of constructing, decorating, and conserving instruments using paper, as well as its use to modify sound have been identified. In addition, papier-mache, cardboard, and parchment, used in the same manner as paper, has been studied. This research provides a primary source of information about the use of paper in musical instruments for future researchers.
