Researchers have documented the transition from elementary school to middle school increased anxiety and noted the middle grade years presented a particularly challenging time for young adolescents (Bailey et al., 2015; Eccles et al., 1996; Kennedy-Lewis, 2013; Knesting et al., 2008; Parker, 2010; Ryan et al., 2013; Theriot & Dupper, 2010). The purpose of this study was to determine how a behavioral intervention, Check In/Check Out (CICO), where teachers utilized positive student/teacher relationships and targeted student supports, influenced student office referrals, student GPAs, and relationships with school staff for students who were identified as at risk for dropping out of school. The specific population being studied was 35 grade 6 to grade 8 students in one medium-sized middle school in the southeastern part of the United States. The students were enrolled in a tier two behavioral intervention, CICO, for the duration of the 2019-2020 school year. I did not find enrollment in CICO raised student GPA or lowered office discipline referrals, in fact, the opposite occurred. Student's GPA on average was lower for the CICO students and office discipline referrals were significantly higher. Similarly, the CICO behavioral intervention did not result in more positive teacher/student relationships, in fact, students not enrolled in CICO reported significantly better relationships than those enrolled in CICO. Further research is needed to determine if CICO is a viable intervention for students at the middle school level.
