Second language learning is a complex process that involves learning vocabulary, word arrangement and grammar, as well as learning about specific culture's way of expressing and communicating their thoughts. During the language learning process, there is a tendency for CLD learners to rely on their native languages for help in producing the words, phrases, and sentences of the second language. This extension of previously existing knowledge to the new experience is known as language interference, and it affects both written and spoken skills. Studies on this topic suggest that impact of native language transfer can be sorted into either positive or negative transfer. Positive transfer helps facilitate language learning in a situation, while negative transfer interferes with language learning (Lin & Jie, 2018). Consequently, it is essential to look for strategies that help ESL teachers to convert language interference into benefits to help CLD learners identify the positive transfer from their native language and to facilitate second language learning.
