Abstract: Every year in the United States, 12% of all nurses leave the field due to low back pain. One of the most common sources of low back pain and injuries among nurses are patient transfers. Interventions should be taken to reduce the impact of preventable back injuries and curtail the impending nursing shortage the United States is facing. This meta-analysis attempts to determine the effects a transfer education program developed by physical therapists has on the low back pain and disability ratings of nurses. Results: Six randomized controlled trials and one quasi-experimental study were analyzed, and effect sizes were calculated using a random effects model. Outcome measures used include the Numeric Pain Rating Scale of 0-10, the Visual Analogue Scale on a 0-10 number line, a 10cm line, and a 100cm line, the Roland Morris questionnaire, the Short Form-8, and The Low Back Pain Rating Scale. Forest plots were created to visualize effect sizes for change in low back pain and disability ratings. Conclusion: This meta found that transfer education programs developed by physical therapists provide a statistically significant reduction in low back pain (-0.17) and a nearly statistically significant reduction in disability ratings (-0.23) in nurses.
