Sport leadership is a topic that is studied frequently in the field of sport psychology. Yet much of the research that exists in sport leadership is done through the adult perspective, including education programs that cater to adult needs. Adolescents have vastly different needs than adults, thus one cannot simply transpose a sport leadership education program designed for an adult athlete onto an adolescent athlete. Previous research (Holt et al., 2018; Karagianni & Montgomery, 2017; Pierce et al., 2020) has indicated various components of current sport leadership education programs designed for adolescent athletes, however there is very little research that proves the efficacy of these components in relation to the development of leadership skills in the adolescent athlete.A descriptive single case study methodology was used to conduct this research. The sample for this case study included high school coaches, with at least one year of coaching experience, who were employed by a public high school in Dallas, Pennsylvania. The coaches were interviewed on their thoughts about what skills and competencies make effective leaders, what strategies they use to develop leadership skills with their athletes, and what they believe are the leadership skills lacking in today's adolescent athlete. Data was collected from five coaches (three male, two female) using semi-structured interviews. Five key themes emerged during data analysis: (1) qualities of an effective leader, (2) the development of a leader, (3) strategies for leadership development, (4) expectations of leaders, and (5) leadership skills that are lacking in today's adolescent athlete. The results of this study showed that most of the participants had similar expectations of the skills that sport leaders should possess and had comparable ideas in what adolescent athletes are lacking in sport leadership skills. These findings align with the initial goal of the research project which was to identify the essential sport leadership skills that adolescent athletes need to develop into effective sport leaders and uncover the leadership skills lacking in today's adolescent athlete. The results did indicate that a few of the participants were unsure of how to incorporate sport leadership education into their practices. Future coach education programs would benefit from additional training focused on helping coaches develop activities for their team that include leadership training opportunities for their athletes.
