Community college athletics is part of the sports fabric of the United States, but community college student athletes are overlooked by researchers and the public compared to 4-year student athletes. Community college student athletes contend with barriers to their success. Therefore, grit was examined for its utility in community college athletics. Through a sequential explanatory mixed methods design, this study examined the relationship between grit and college GPA, explored how student athletes conceptualized their institutional experiences, and established metainferences that explained the significant quantitative findings. Although grit was not related to college GPA, first-generation and financial aid recipients reported more grit than non-first-generation athletes. Four student athletes were interviewed, and they expressed their challenges of being student athletes and the importance of institutional and familial support, passion for athletics, and being intrinsically motivated to succeed. However, student athletes felt stigmatized by others for being at the community college level. Mixed methods findings showed more life experiences allowed for high development of grit and how expressing vulnerability can help athletes succeed. It was recommended that counselors and coaches quantitatively and qualitatively assess community college student athletes' grit. Additionally, encouraging athletes to be vulnerable may help them succeed and was implicated for future research.
